Visiting Fragile Beauty, The Exhibition
Photographs from the Sir Elton John and David Furnish Collection
As quoted from the V&A museum: “An unparalleled selection of the world's leading photographers, telling the story of modern and contemporary photography.”
I visited Fragile Beauty: Photographs from the Sir Elton John and David Furnish Collection this past week, and I was not disappointed. I have some interest in photography, but not much beyond appreciating a good angle and a well-framed iPhone picture. However, after recently going down the YouTube rabbit hole of compact mirrorless cameras, I’ve started to geek out over various features and lenses.
I had heard great things about this exhibition, and it truly is a massive collection of some highly recognisable and coveted images. You walk through themed rooms such as “Fashion,” “Desire,” or “The American Scene,” but my favourite was the titled “Fragile Beauty” which featured photographers such as Nan Golding and Ryan McGinley. McGinley has been one of my favourite photographers since the Tumblr generation of the early 2000’s. I learnt some of my favourite photos which show off a sense of youthful freedom and nostalgia were actually carefully planned and produced as the placard explains further down below. Sam Taylor-Johnson's work “Men don’t cry” features famous actors crying, evoking emotion in the viewer even though you know it’s not real - another favourite.
After the Exhibition I had dinner in Kings Cross and stumbled upon the Everyman outdoor cinema playing Clueless across from the canal. Summer in London is great.
All photos below are taken on my eBay-bought Sony mirrorless camera.
If you would like to see the exhibition, tickets are available Here, or buy the book and other fun items over Here.
Have a great week!
